Ice ? in Dublin Texas – Growing Up in Dublin, Texas

Alright I have to admit it does get cold in Dublin Texas from time to time. It happened while I was in the the first or second year. We would always walk to school as it was really only a couple of blocks away. Regardless we would always walk about half way Harris street and then take the little road that laid behind the back yards of the houses on Lions Avenue. On the opposite side of the little road was a pasture that also set behind the houses and across the road from our house. After a small bit it would make a 90 degree turn to the right and there was the High School to the left and in front of us with a playground immediately to the left.

Knowing that I was a pain for my big Brothers to be tagging along with them I would always cut through the play ground heading toward the Grade School located a bit further down the block from the High School.

This morning it was cold and the roads were still icy in spots. It was busy this time of the morning and cars were moving slowly along the road. I came up to the road and gagged my distance before the next car would come by.

Thinking I had a clear shot at making it across the road I took off running. Only to slip and fall flat on my face. It was if someone had pulled my feet out from under me. My School Books and stuff went flying across and along the road.

I thought , “Ahha Man !! It is going to take me forever to pick all this stuff up, and that I would be late for class.” Before this thought was over, I heard a couple of girls scream, and heard tires skidding on the pavement. Looking immediately to my left I saw the front bumper of a car headed my way. All went silent for what seemed an eternity, and everything felt like was moving in extreme slow motion. Then reality was back and just as soon as I seen it, it was past, and above me.

The car’s front end was over top of me. As soon as this started it ended. I just laid there not moving. Nothing seemed to be moving now. Looking up I saw the big kids staring toward me.

The next thing, I heard some one yelling, “Voohie !! Voochie !! Your little brother is under that car.”

The car backed up, and all these kids were picking up and straightening out my school books and stuff. And my Brother Kenneth was there above me picking me up. He gave me a hug and carried me to the other side of the road.

Brushing me off and straightening my clothes he asked if I was all right.

Numbingly I replied, “Sure, I am fine.”

He thanked the other kids, who had helped with my things, then after handing them to me, he grabbed my hand and we went over to the rock fence, between the road and the tennis courts. He got his books from one of his friends, and then walked me to my class room door.

He let my Second Grade Teacher know what had happen, and told her if I need him, he would right next door at the High School.

Kneeling down next to me, he gave me a pat on the shoulder and told me the same.

Hope you enjoyed my ramblings and that it brought back few memories of you childhood days, no matter what state you hail from.
