The maternal grandparents of our subject were Peter and Sally(GOODNIGHT) BOUCHER. The former was born in Virginia in 1763,and was a son of Peter BOUCHER, who was a French Huguenot, andwho left France on account of religious persecution. The originalFrench spelling of the name was BOUSHELDER, but was changedto Boucher owing to a mistake made by a lawyer in making outsome land deeds in their name. Peter Boucher was married inMaryland, to a Welsh woman. In his old days he became an imbecile, and while living with his son Peter ran away and managed toevade his friends, who were searching for him, until he wasthirty miles from home, in another county. He was accidentallyshot here by a young man who had picked up an old gun that hadbeen loaded for years, and pointed it at him. To the surpriseof all it went off, killing the old man almost instantly. Hisson Peter came to Kentucky with Daniel BOONE on his second orthird trip, and was in the battle of Blue Licks, where the Indiansdefeated the whites, killing nearly all of them. His horse waskilled under him, but he managed to make his escape by boundingupon a horse behind a soldier who was passing. He lived to beninety-three years of age, his death occurring in Allen County,Ky., in 1856. His wife, Sally (GOODNIGHT) BOUCHER, was bornin 1777, and emigrated with her parents from Germany to Virginiawhen she was three years of age. They soon moved to Boone StationKy., making the trip on ponies, but broke down when about aday's journey from the station, and were obliged to leave aportion of their goods. They reached the station safely, butthe oldest son, John, returned with his father to get the goodsthat had been left behind. While returning they camped on acreek about twenty miles east of the station and cooked andate a turkey, which the father had shot, for their supper. Fearingto attract the attention of the Indians John tried to persuadehis father to move their camp, but the old gentleman thoughtthere was no danger and refused to move. In the night they wereattacked by the Indians, who had crept upon their camp, andthe father was shot and killed. John was also shot, but notseriously, and he succeeded in effecting his escape. He reachedthe station about ten o'clock the next day. The Indians werepursued, but not found. The father's body was found, and hewas buried on the bank of the creek where he was killed, buthis friends of late years have been unable to find his grave.Shortly after his death his youngest child was born--Isaac byname--who was the third white child born in the State of Kentucky.Isaac lived to be very old, and died near Martinsville, WarrenCounty, Ky., in 1874. John, Henry, Jacob and Isaac were thebrothers of the maternal grandmother, Sally GOODNIGHT, who diedin Kentucky in 1840.
